Another day, another name thrown into the Donald Trump mix for Cabinet picks.
Trump’s caused quite a furor on the left with his choices so far, particularly his naming of retired Marine Gen. James “Mad Dog” Mattis for secretary of defense and MobilExxon CEO Rex Tillerson for secretary of state.
And his reported selection for Interior Secretary, first whispered by the Associated Press on Tuesday, isn’t likely to leave a good taste in the Democratic Party’s mouth, either.
“Trump has offered Montana Rep. Ryan Zinke the job of interior secretary, though it’s unclear whether the congressman has accepted, two people with knowledge of the offer said,” the Associated Press reported.
Zinke is a retired Nacy SEAL with two Bronze Stars for serving in combat missions in Iraq – an honor that sets him almost immediately at odds with the pacifist hard-left.
He’s also been a staunch supporter of Trump and was just spotted coming out of a meeting at Trump Tower with the president-elect earlier this week. Currently, Zinke, 55, serves on the House Natural Resources Committee, where he presses policy that opens the public lands for energy exploration.
Republicans had been eyeing him as a possible challenger to Democratic Sen. Jon Tester in 2018. But it appears Trump may have snatched him for a Cabinet role if AP’s sources have it right.
“The people with knowledge of the offer to Zinke insisted on anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the transition process publicly,” AP reported.
One other fact about Zinke that endears him to the right but alienates him from the left?
“Zinke attracted attention in the 2014 campaign for calling Hillary Clinton the ‘antichrist,'” AP reminded.
He said in an interview with AP, by way of explanation: “Do I really believe that she is the antichrist? That answer would be ‘no.’ But I do get a little emotional about Benghazi and I, like the rest of America, want answers.”
Oh yes, and one other attribute that makes Zinke great for the interior job: He’s raised questions about the notion of climate change being “settled science,” something that drives the left crazy with fury.
