In a rare moment of agreement, congressional leaders on both sides of the aisle and the Trump administration were able to come together to agree that something was wrong.
After years of civil war and a dictator repeatedly challenging President Obama’s red line, action was finally taken.
According to the Conservative Tribune, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer displayed a rare moment of peace between the parties when they praised President Trump’s response to the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s use of chemical weapons on his own people.
The attack occurred on Tuesday as Syrian forces reportedly used sarin gas on their own citizens in a small town believed to be harboring rebels to the Assad regime.
Trump ordered a military response on Thursday night.
“Making sure Assad knows that when he commits such despicable atrocities he will pay a price is the right thing to do,”
Schumer said in a statement. ABC News reported that his praise was limited, however, until he saw Trump’s full-fledged strategy.
He also insisted that Trump seeks congressional approval for his strategy.
Pelosi called Trump’s response “a proportional response to the regime’s use of chemical weapons.”
The president ordered an air strike on the base from which the chemical weapons were stored and launched.
“If the president intends to escalate the U.S. military’s involvement in Syria, he must come to Congress for an authorization for use of military force which is tailored to meet the threat and prevent another open-ended war in the Middle East,” Pelosi said echoing Schumer’s statement.
Pelosi and Schumer were both criticized harshly by those on the far left for their praise of Trump.
“Democrats are acting like a bunch of cowards,” said Murshed Zaheed, political director at the advocacy organization CREDO Action.
“We are calling on all congressional leaders to call for emergency deliberations on Trump’s illegal escalation in Syria. Anything short of that will show that Democrats are completely out of touch with the base of their party.”
Perhaps Mr. Zaheed misunderstands the meaning of the word cowards.
Continuing Obama’s policy of allowing a madman to use chemical weapons on innocent men, women, and children because it would be unpopular with the base is true cowardice.
Trump is finally standing up to this man where Obama refused to.
